Shurijo Castle
Among the castles that have been designated as World Heritage Sites, Shurijo Castle is probably the most outstanding.
At the time of the island’s unification, Shurijo Castle was already historically important.
For the next 450 years, the Castle was the political, economic and cultural center of this island.
The Seiden State Hall is not only the largest wooden building on the island, but also expresses the wisdom of a people who successfully combined Chinese and Japanese architectures with the originality of Okinawan culture.
Shikina-en Gardens
Shikina-en Gardens was the second home of the Ryukyuan kings and was also called the southern residence. Built around 1800, it welcomed envoys from the Chinese imperial government, called Sapposhi. Centered on a pond that is designed after the Chinese character for “heart”, the garden offers a wonderful promenade with a pond where floats a hexagonal Chinese-style building linked by an arched stone bridge. On the north side is the Ikutokusen spring while on the south side is Kankodai, an observatory platform.
